Day 20, Torrey, Utah

Another beautiful sunshiny day. Gets quite cool in the night .. 6.5 .. but we turn on our little furnace and in no time, we are nice and cozy.

We decided we would do a little hiking this morning so we headed for Hickman Bridge which was a 2-mile return trail. It was quite hot already even though it was only 10h30 but we got into the swing of it and all went well. This was an arch bridge which you could walk through. It was 133 ft. wide by 125 ft. high. We saw many new flowers along the way. We really enjoyed it. After returning to the camper, we made ourselves a little picnic and sat in the shade enjoying just being there.

We must tell you about this couple we met on the trail. Each one was carrying a bird cage containing two cockatails (spelling?), yes birds. They took them for a hike. Upon returning and enquiring, we found out one of the birds was 21 years old, another 16, a third 13 and finally the youngest 6. Can you imagine!!!

After lunch we took a backway scenic route but apart from having a very different topography, very dry and desert like, there was nothing outstanding to see. There was a ranch up on a hill and from a memorial plaque we learned that the Durfey Family had lived there since 1919. They had had 11 children, one of which was still alive in 2010.

We went back to the petroglyph stop and took a boardwalk along the base of the cliffs to view more petroglyphs. Very beautiful colours of caramel and white stone, different from all others we had seen.

Then we headed for the scenic route up to the Capitol Gorge. Well that was quite the experience. After driving for about 10 miles on paved roads, we took a rough, dusty, narrow, gravel road, and twisty. I took so many photos. It was unbelievable, driving so close to the cliffs (see photo of Roadtrek). It did enter our minds that should a rock decide to fall, the odds were that it would miss us, we hope. It was fun!!!

After coming back onto the main road, we decided to take the second gravel spur road leading to Grand Wash. We stopped to inspect an old uranium mine (the first claim was filed in 1901). This road was not as deep as the first one nor as spectacular but still quite the ride.

Heading back on the scenic road, again the light was perfect and I took more photos ... (see photo)

Stopped and picked up some nice steak for supper. Took a photo of Ross sitting at our campsite. We have a super one this time, we are at the extreme end of the campground, and as you can see with a beautiful view.

Time for bed. Tomorrow we rest and get some laundry done .. again ..
