Day 31 - Grand Canyon South Rim

It is sunny and 17.9 degrees. Ross is on the internet and booked us a couple of tickets to see the Cirque du Soleil show "O" in Las Vegas on Sunday evening .. a very special treat to celebrate our 44th Wedding Anniversary.

Leaving Page, we headed south. We stopped for a 2.5 mile hike to Horseshoe Bend, a 270-degree entrenched meander of the Colorado River thru the Glen Canyon, 300 meters below (see photo). Just amazing but the wind was there too. We had timed well our walk as it started to rain when we got back to the motorhome and our temperature is starting to go down. It is 13.7 now.

We made a few photo stops and at one of them we found a yucca in bloom ... I thought they bloomed much later. That was a real treat.

The rain continues and our temperature is still going down -- 7.3 degrees.

We drive thru the town of Gap. The skies ahead are foggy. Very different topography here. Lots of gray mounds that look like small volcanoes. The Painted Desert - beige, yellow and pink sand topped with darker sand.

We have turned onto #64. We stopped and paid $2 to the Navajo Tribal Park to be able to see the Little Colorado River Gorge but the wind kept us from getting too close to the edge. Just up the road, we found a free viewpoint which gave us an even better view with less wind. It was also a perfect spot for lunch.

Back on #64 we are approaching the East Entrance to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Can you believe snow! It is 3.4 degrees now. We see blue skies ahead! Now 2.5 degrees. A snowstorm. When we get to the Visitor Center we are able to get to the rim and behold there is sun on the cliffs ahead. It is a spectacular view. It is so immense. The snow has not stopped. Luckily we found a campground at Desert View among the Utah junipers. We pay our fee ($12) and then return to drive to other viewpoints - Navajo - Lipan. The snow has stopped and we can see blue sky and big white clouds ahead but it is cold!

Visited the Tusayan Museum and ruins depicting life in the Grand Canyon going back to 5,000 years ago. Very interesting.

We headed to the next viewpoint - Moran Point, but it has started to snow again and now there is no more view so we head back to our campsite, turned on the furnace, and hunkered down for the night. There are two cyclists across from us with a tiny little tent. We don't envy their set-up.

However, at 7 pm, we have just finished dinner and the sun is shining (2.5 degrees) so we decided to drive back to the Desert View rim to see if we can catch the setting sun but unfortunately with all the clouds, it didn't amount to much, but still it was so beautiful just to look down and enjoy the view. That's it for today!
